Young couple with small dog looking for apartment

Hello, Ditmas Park! We are a young couple with a small dog (a Yorkie) and we are looking to buy a large 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom in your neighborhood. We love Ditmas, but are finding it difficult to locate a building that is dog friendly. If you have any leads or ideas, please comment on our post below. Thanks for your input!

  1. We had a similar issue but we found a great apartment that is Ditmas park adjacent (2913 Foster Ave), affordable, and pet friendly. There's a couple listings up on StreetEasy.com currently.

  2. Thank you so much for the advice! How long have you lived at 2913 Foster? What's the area like? We are more familiar with the area west of your location.

    1. We've been here for about a year. The neighborhood is mostly Caribbean families. Basically, everyone is either nice and friendly or they just keep to themselves. There's a lot of pot smoking but that's really all there is in the ways of crime. We're just a few blocks away from Target, the Flatbush Junction, and Brooklyn College. Just around the corner from the laundromat, Keyfood, Meat Place (a grocery store sized meat store), and the Farm Stand which has a huge excellent selection of produce, and one block away from the 2/5 train. The only issue we've had is that since there's two place withing a block that sell fried chicken, there's always some chicken bones on the sidewalk on Nostrand.

And yes, the rents are too damn high lives a block away!

  3. 601 East 19th street (btwn newkirk and foster) and 570 Westminster Road (at Newkirk) are both pet friendly coop buildings.

There are a few other buildings in the area that are pet friendly (or have pets living there)... including one on Rugby at Cortelyou, another on Dorchester at 21st street (a condo, I think). There may be others that are slowly changing, but it's definitely hard to find a good sized apartment in the area that will allow dogs.

    Good luck!

  4. I would say to look at my one-bedroom apartment for sale that I just posted, however, the building is not yet dog-friendly but may become dog-friendly sooner than later. I guess that doesn't help you much right now though! Good luck with your search!

    1. Any chance your building will be turning pet-friendly soon? Would the board be willing to make an exception? He really is a super sweet dog.
