MULCHFEST TREE DROP-OFFS BEGIN THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26

 

Mulchfest 2020 chipping Saturdays: Jan 4 and 11

 

As the holidays are upon us, now is the perfect time to find a location to recycle your tree. NYC Parks’ Mulchfest provides New Yorkers the opportunity to recycle their trees at a local park, with convenient drop-off sites in all five boroughs making it easier than ever to say goodbye your holiday tree!

Mulchfest 2020 runs from December 26 through January 11. With 67 total drop-off sites—32 are chipping sites—across the five boroughs, including parks and GreenThumb gardens, New Yorkers will be able drop off holiday trees which are then chipped and recycled. The mulch is used to nourish city trees and plants making make NYC even greener.

 

This year, New Yorkers have two consecutive Saturdays when they can actively mulch their holiday trees—Saturday, January 4 and 11. This new schedule makes it easier than ever for all to say goodbye to their trees in an ecofriendly way, and take a bag of nutrient rich mulch home in the process. Weather permitting, DSNY will also collect and compost clean trees left at curbs from Monday, January 6 through Friday, January 17, 2020.

 

Mulchfest, part of the New York City’s holiday tradition, encourages New Yorkers to make greening a family activity—turning holiday trees into mulch which can be used for gardening and to increase soil fertility. For more than 20 years, Parks and DSNY have collected and mulched trees to help planting beds and community gardens around the city grow. Mulch maintains the health of our trees and plants citywide by deterring weeds, retaining moisture, preventing compaction, adding nutrients to the soil, and keeping roots warm. In recent years, Parks has mulched between 25,000 and 30,000 on average annually.

Bring your tree to a chipping site to take home a tree-mento! We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

 

LOCATIONS:            NYC Parks hosts Mulchfest drop-off only locations and chipping sites in select parks and Greenthumb gardens across all five boroughs—67 locations in all. A complete list of all Mulchfest locations can be found on NYC Parks' website.

Next Steps: The Evolution of Yahoo Groups (Final Notification)

Dear Group Moderators and Members, Last month we notified you of the changes coming to Yahoo Groups that better align with user habits, and today we are providing an update to guide you through the next steps of the transition. Yahoo Groups is not going away - but we are making adjustments to ultimately serve you better. We are amazed at the vibrant community you've created through Yahoo Groups and we want to make sure you feel supported as we introduce these changes. The following changes were made since our last communication:    •   Users can now only join a Yahoo Group through an invite or group request approval by the Group Moderator.    •   New Groups can't be public. They can only be private (not listed in Groups directory, membership by invitation only) or restricted (listed in Groups directory, membership requests must be approved by a Group Moderator).    •   Members must share all content via email, and can no longer upload or host new content on the Yahoo Groups website itself. The following changes will be made on December 14, 2019:    •   Public groups will no longer exist. All existing public Groups will become restricted Groups that require Group Moderator approval to join.    •   Any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed. If you would like to keep any of the content you've posted or stored within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing the Groups Download Manager at this link. Once you provide your preferred email address, we will send you a confirmation of your download request and notify you once the download is complete. You will receive a link to a downloadable zip file via email for each of your Groups organized into a separate folder. Download time varies depending on the amount of information and file size. If your download request is made by 11:59pm PST on Saturday, December 14, 2019, your content will not be deleted until your download is complete. We are unable to accommodate any download requests made after this deadline. This is the final reminder to download your content. You can find additional information about the upcoming changes here. We have worked extensively with our customer support team to develop recommendations for tools that can help you with any download issues. See help article here. NYC PARKS IS CALLING FOR LIFEGUARDS! TRY OUT FOR A CHANCE TO BECOME A LIFEGUARD FOR SUMMER 2020

 

Qualifying tests will be held at locations in all five boroughs for lifeguards for the summer 2020 season

DETAILS:                   Help us keep millions of New Yorkers safe at NYC's eight beaches and 53 outdoor pools this summer. As one of just 1,400 NYC Parks Lifeguards, you will be part of an elite group that is committed to serving the public.

 

One of the best jobs in New York City, lifeguarding gives people the opportunity to work in a rewarding and challenging environment during the busy summer months. It requires split-second decision making that could mean the difference between life and death and helps develop valuable skills—a strong work ethic, teamwork, leadership, and communication—that will last a lifetime in any profession.

 

Before joining our lifeguard training program, applicants must pass the Qualifying Test, a set of vision and swim exams. All candidates are tested by Parks’ Lifeguard School to ensure that they meet the highest standards.

 

Qualifying test requirements:

 

·         Be at least 16 years of age by the start of employment.

·         Have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other - without corrective lenses.

·         Glasses and contact lenses may not be worn during the eye exam.

·         Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds or less, with proper form.
