Cecilia Cortez For City Council District 40 Brooklyn 2021

As I continue my campaign for NY City Council District 40, I stand with all essential workers who are working right now and ask for better pay and better working conditions. As your NY City Council member, I will work very hard to protect the rights and working conditions of all of NY City workers. I am committed to bettering the lives of everyone in Brooklyn during these challenging circumstances and all other times.

Friday, May 1st is known as International Workers Day, a day we celebrate workers' rights around the world. May Day is as American as apple pie. In the 1900s people in the USA were struggling to get 8-hour work days. Working conditions at that time were often abysmal with work days of 10 to 16 hours in very unsafe conditions.
We must keep the pressure on big business to do the right thing. Workers must be protected and paid properly, especially in these uncertain times. Amazon's workers are planning a strike on May 1st to bring attention to the lack of safety and sick leave at their workplaces. Workers at Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, and FedEx are planning to strike on May 1 by calling in sick or walking off the job, according to The Intercept. Organizers of the May Day protest say there are COVID-19 outbreaks in at least 125 of Amazon's 175 worldwide fulfillment centers. They're calling for full transparency from the company about the outbreaks and compensation for all unpaid time off since March. Amazon said that a fulfillment center employee who is now helping to organize the May Day demonstration was fired for, according to Amazon, violating a company-enforced quarantine. Two Amazon tech workers were also fired for calling attention to Amazon's coronavirus response.
According to the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, "thousands of meatpacking workers have been infected by COVID-19 and at least 20 have died." I stand with the meatpacking workers in their struggle and ask for better working conditions for them now.
We still should stay home for now. Continue to use a mask when going outside and wash your hands frequently. Governor Cuomo announced the creation of the New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Board to help guide the state's re-opening strategy. The advisory board will be chaired by former secretaries to the Governor Steve Cohen and Bill Mulrow, and will include over 100 business, community and civic leaders from NYS.
I am very thankful to the essential workers—medical professionals, delivery people, food service workers and so many others—who make it possible for us to continue to stay at home and have the things we need to keep going.

Cecilia Cortez For City Council District 40 2021

Dear Friends:

I hope you are healthy and well.

As I work on my campaign for City Council District 40 this past month, the COVID-19 pandemic has made life difficult for us all. I am very sad that we have lost a lot of people over the past few weeks. The impact of the disease on our lives has been daunting. We have had to adapt to the new "normal", and social distancing is now a common phrase in our vocabulary. We are now beginning to see the peak of new cases of the disease here in New York. By continuing to stay home and practice social distancing we will help accomplish our goal of ending this crisis. We must stay together and emerge from this stronger than ever, and be thankful to the health workers, grocery workers, pharmacy workers, and everyone on the front lines that have taken care of us all.
Despite all this, many of us have just celebrated Easter or Passover and I wish a happy and healthy holiday to all.
I remain committed to working for the community to move forward to better times.
I come to you to ask for your financial contribution to my campaign.
