Cecilia Cortez For City Council District 40 2021

As I continue my campaign for NYC council in district 40, in 2021, I have heard this week that schools should open in the Fall for the next school year, though whether and how often students will physically attend schools is uncertain.

Mayor De Blasio said schools are planning to open in the Fall. He said students may go 3 times a week.  Or once a week. Or every other week.  It is not clear what the plan is. He said he knows the plan is students are going back to school.

The CDC guidelines say children meeting in groups "can put everyone at risk," and that children "can pass this virus onto others who have an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19."  The guidelines also call for 6 feet of social distancing and other measures to decrease the risk of spreading the virus.

President Donald Trump and his administration have asked all schools to reopen fully next September. He has also threatened to withhold money from districts that don't reopen in the fall.

Ms. DeVos, Secretary of Education said "School leaders across the country need to be making plans". "There will be exceptions to the rule, but the rule should be kids go back to school this fall. And where there are little flare-ups or hot spots, that can be dealt with school by school or a case-by-case basis. There's opportunity to have kids in school."

Randy Weingarten said schools shouldn't open because they don't have the money they need to open.  We need Congress to pass the HEROES Act.

Superintendents across the United states are saying different things.  There are guidelines and they should be followed.  We need to teach our children, but more important we need to keep them healthy and safe.
