SPOKE THE HUB (STH) is offering both full and partial scholarships to young dancers aged 8 to 18 years, with or without previous experience, based on financial need and merit.  The audition will take the form of a modern dance class and will include warm-up, improvisation, and combination's across the floor. (Students do not need to prepare any material in advance).  Dance scholarships will be awarded for classes in Modern Dance Technique, Ballet, Improvisation/Choreography/Performance, and others to be selected. The fall term for scholarship students will begin Monday, September 12, 2011 and run through February, 2012.

Teenagers may also be considered for work/study internships in our office.  Applicants must call to set up an appointment and families must bring a copy of their most recent tax return to the audition.  For further details and to receive an application form, please call: (718) 408-3234, or email us at spoke@spokethehub.org.

Students involved in dance at STH have plenty of opportunities to create and perform their own original choreography throughout the year.  They also work with professional guest artists, and are often invited to participate in SPOKE THE HUB's professional adult productions.  Over the years, SPOKE THE HUB's Young Artists have earned additional scholarships to the American Dance Festival, the Alvin Ailey School, and the Feld Ballet, in addition to colleges throughout the country.  They have also performed with STH's adult company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, at the World Trade Center, and at Lincoln Center, as well as performing independently at the Kitchen, P.S. 122, DTW, and with Meredith Monk/The House.

All youth company members are required to take a minimum of two technique classes a week at SPOKE THE HUB, and must be available for occasional additional weekend rehearsals and performances throughout the year. This pre-professional program is geared toward developing tomorrow's most outstanding and creative theater artists.

"A Clean Church Avenue"

On Saturday, July 30, 2011 from 9:00am - noon, the Church Avenue Business Improvement District will be hosting “A Clean Church Avenue” to paint over graffiti on storefronts and other buildings, add mulch to trees along the avenue, and remove posters from property from Coney Island Ave. to Flatbush Ave.  Volunteers are needed!

 

The clean up will be followed by a volunteer thank you lunch on the grounds of the Flatbush Reformed Church.

With 10 years of teaching experience under my belt, I can tailor lessons to meet the needs of any student. My current students range from age 5 through adult, and all of them genuinely love to play the flute! I like to give my students the opportunity to perform in biannual recitals, a fun experience for everyone involved. 

As a performer of both classical and contemporary music, I give my students a taste of modern techniques such as improvising, singing and playing, and multiphonics in addition to traditional flute playing and repertoire. I believe in the idea of the "modern flutist", meaning the flutist who is trained to be versatile, artistic, and inquisitive from the get-go. 

Past faculty positions include Douglaston School of Music (Queens), Walnut Valley School District (So.Cal), and Irvine Art and Music (So. Cal). 

I currently teach through Brooklyn Music Lessons and maintain my own studio as well. This September I will begin a doctoral program in flute performance at The Graduate Center.  

My main influences as a teacher are John Barcellona (author of the "Flute Doctor" series in Flute Talk Magazine) and Robert Dick (author of the seminal work, "The Other Flute").

These three kittens were rescued outdoors very sick with severe and painful eye infections that threatened their eyesight. Now they are restored to health and are seeking a loving, permanent home, though temporary fosterers would be welcome, also.

 

They are 8 weeks old, FeLV/FIV negative and have had their first round of vaccinations. They  love to be held and play.

 

Decker, a male who is white with black markings, is the most playful and energetic of the bunch. He cannot pass up any opportunity to chase a ball or jump high in the air for a string. When you cuddle with him he purrs like a motorcycle engine.

 

Jimmy, also black and white male, was the last one to be rescued and is still a little bit shy. He is very sweet and loves to have his chin and belly rubbed and will return the favor with plenty of purring.

  

Beautiful Marley, is the only female in the group. She is white with gray markings and also playful when she gets the chance. She too, will purr and cuddle. She will grow up to be an even lovelier kitty than she already is.

 

The kittens love each other and would prefer to be adopted in pairs, or singly into a home with another cat-friendly cat.

Dear Torah scholars,
Torah study will continue through the summer. We will meet on Friday evenings at 7:30 to study the weekly Torah portion, followed by services at 8:30 pm, as usual.
