Tikkun L'eil Shavuot 8:00 PM to midnight
A full evening of discussion and learning in preparation for Shavuot
This year:
When Identities Collide:
Exploring pieces of our selves that don't seem to match
Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mt. Sinai, essentially the moment when they become Jews. But Jewishness was not their only identity—they were also former slaves, and we see in the Torah the way they struggle between these identities. We, too, sometimes struggle with different aspects of our identities, and that is what we will explore.
We will begin with havdallah, separating the sacred Shabbat from the everyday week, then delve into issues of identity.
Speakers will include:
Anthropologist Henry Goldschmidt on the weirdness of Jewish identity
Rabbi Heidi Hoover on being a convert with a German Christian heritage
Loren Levinson on having to choose the faith already given
And more!
$10 for members, $15 for non-members.
Date and time: Saturday, June 4, 8:00 PM to midnight
Location: Temple Beth Emeth, 83 Marlborough Rd., in the function room (downstairs)
Refreshments will be provided.
RSVPs and questions: call the temple at (718) 282-1596, or email templebeth83@aol.com
