Soon it will be that time of year... the doldrums of January.  Time to
perk up with 13 hours of Balkan music, dance, snacks, and fun.  As it
was last year, the Golden Festival will be held at historic Grand
Prospect Hall in Park Slope, 263 Prospect Ave, Brooklyn.  More than 60
groups have applied to perform.  This year's schedule is still to be
finalized (keep your eyes on the festival website ), but last year
about 2500 people heard some 71 groups over the two nights.

From the beginning in 1986 the festival has been a benefit for Balkan

Spoke the Hub birthday celebrants invite one and all to come party UP with us as we summit new heights at our neighbor's place — Brooklyn Boulders — across the street from our Gowanus space on 295 Doulgas Street. As their founder says, "If you can climb a ladder, you can climb a wall" and there is plenty of padding everywhere for the more timid or fragile amongst us!

In lieu of gifts, we Capricorns are asking our friends and families for a $25 donation (or more, if you can) to Spoke the Hub this year which will go toward supporting our work at the Consolation Center- Haiti, a new girls' school and orphanage we have been partners with since 2010. (Our next work trip to the CCH in Haiti is in February 2012 – want to join us?)

Here's what your $25 donation gets you:
Admission to Brooklyn Boulders where you will be outfitted with a pair of special climbing shoes, then you can climb their fabulous walls or learn to tightrope walk ("slack lining") any time you want, between 11am and midnight on Saturday, January 21, 2012.

For a $100 (or more) donation:
you have access to all of the above as well as your own Boulder's climbing expert to assist you the art of belaying! (Belaying donations must be received by January 13th in order to secure your instructor. To "Learn the Ropes" yourself, a separate belaying certification course is offered; please contact Brooklyn Boulders for course certification details:

Please make your tax-deductible "Capricorn's Birthday Bash" donations online or drop off in our office before January 21st as you will need an official Capricorn's Bash receipt to get in and climb on Saturday.

Yesterday, a stray Pit Bull made my back yard his/her home. After trying to find his owner and contacting several Rescue Shelters,  Animal Care & Control picked him up. Elvis the cat has disappeared!

My beloved cat Elvis disappeared 2 weeks ago while I was away. He was last seen on East 18 St. near Foster. He is all black, quite large, very long fur, big bushy tail like a squirrel's, no collar, shy with strangers but affectionate when petted. I am heartbroken.
