Presented by Playing with Reality, An interactive performance ensemble
Saturday, July 9th
4:00-7:00pm
Ever wish you could do more than just sit back, considering what you would do in a given scenario? Playing with Reality rewards those who prefer to take an active part in creating the story.
Stuart Brown, M.D.—medical doctor, psychiatrist, clinical researcher, and author of Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the imagination and Invigorates the Soul—states that our ability to play enables us to innovate, problem-solve, and be happy, smart, resilient human beings. Playing with Reality is a company that encourages play for the non-actor. We invite volunteers to become the protagonist of a twenty-five minute story created on the spot, not for the purpose of comedy but rather to create rich narratives exploring human connection, decision making, and new ways of being in the world.
We will open with group and partner improvisation exercises to break the ice and create a safe space. We will then play three twenty-five minute stories, each with a volunteer workshop participant as the protagonist. Those watching will gain a sense of community by being able to consider what they would do in a given scenario and having viewpoints to debate afterward. Each story will be followed with a ten minute debrief session for the volunteer protagonist. The last ten minutes of the workshop will be devoted to group reflection.
Playing with Reality, formed in April 2010, has grown from five company members to eleven. We produced our first production in the summer of 2010 at Shetler Studios, from which we were offered a 6-month residency at the new Canal Park Playhouse (November 29, 2010- May 23, 2011). Due to the nature of our work, we're developing processes with applications beyond entertainment, such as healing, self- empowerment/discovery, and social justice.
