ABOUT THE PARK

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest landfill to park transformation project in the world. Located on the west shore of Staten Island, it was the site of the former Freshkills Landfill which closed in 2001. Since then, the mounds have been covered and systems have been installed to control and treat the byproducts of landfill operations.  The engineered landscape is now home to emerging ecological habitats that support wildlife including rare birds. It is an incredible classroom and research site. As the park is built in phases, free tours and recreational and cultural events provide early access for learning and exploration opportunities. Come experience the transformation for yourself!

Presented by NYC Parks and the Freshkills Park Alliance. For more details and updates on other upcoming events follow @freshkillspark and visit www.freshkillspark.org.
