CLEAN UP, CLEAN OUT: FALL DETOX & TOXINS IN THE HOME
Thursday, October 11, 2012, 7-9pm at Bija Kids
It is common knowledge, that when we don't clean our house for a long period of time, junk inevitably builds up and disorganization ensues. This simple basic truth applies to the physical body as well. In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of regular internal cleansing and will explore specific plants and foods that are known to rejuvenate the body by assisting in the removal of toxins. We will examine the role of the liver, kidneys and lymph system and will explore plants such as Milk Thistle, Burdock and Dandelion. We will also talk about the importance and challenge of truly creating a clean home environment, free of chemicals and air pollutants. When we cleanse our bodies and the environments we inhabit, our minds are more at ease, our senses revived and our spirits are lighter.
Handcrafted tea will be served!

Plants have been used for thousands of years in cultures around the world to aid in meditation and to cleanse the spirit. The sense of smell is our only sense directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain. The limbic system is connected to parts of the brain that control memory, pleasure and emotions, as well as physiological functions such as heart rate, hormonal release and breathing. As a result, calming aromatic plants have profound effects on our physical and emotional bodies. Restorative yoga is a practice designed to unlock tension and encourage genuine relaxation. During deep relaxation, all of our organs are benefited and we allow the entire body to regenerate on a cellular level. The marriage of yogic and plant-based therapies will balance the nervous system, revive your senses and leave you feeling renewed. (warning: you may leave levitating.)
Throughout the series, a variety of herbal preparations will be used, including essential oils, herbal smudges, incense, limpias, tinctures & teas. Each class will focus on three season-appropriate plants.

HERBS FOR KIDS & HERBAL SYRUP MAKING
Thursday, November 8, 2012, 7-9pm, at Bija Kids
Whether they are picking flowers, climbing trees or playing in the dirt, children seem to innately understand the connection we have with the plant world. Introducing kids early on to the use of plants for their own healing can set the stage for a life grounded in self-knowledge, self-love and self-care. In this workshop, Alicia will give an introductory talk about the use of herbs and whole foods in child care. We will discuss herbal preparations, dosages and safety and will explore methods of intake that appeal to younger palates. Herbal syrups are a sweet and effective alternative to bad tasting medicines or stronger alcohol-based herbal preparations. Come learn how to make your own herbal syrup and have it on hand for the winter months.
Handcrafted tea will be served!
