Award-winning artist Zaq Landsberg to give free talks on the recent "Tomb Effigy of Margaret Corbin" installation in the park!

EVENT:                      NYC Parks & the Fort Tryon Park Trust invite New Yorkers to don their finest colonial regalia and travel back in time to commemorate the 1776 Battle of Fort Washington! 

 

The free event will explore the colonial history and Revolutionary War significance of the battle and park with blacksmith and cooking demonstrations, live 18th-century music and games, and revolutionary era arts & crafts. Artist Zaq Landsberg will give two free talks on his recent installation in honor of Margaret Corbin, considered the first woman to fight for America during the Battle of Fort Washington in 1776.   

 

DETAILS:                   This year marks the 245th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Washington, a key event during the Revolutionary War. 

 

Admission to the event, including demonstrations, live colonial music & games, arts & crafts, and artist talks are free, and prizes will be offered to attendees wearing the most authentic costumes!

Claire Weiss Emerging Artist Award Winner Zaq Landsberg "Tomb Effigy of Margaret Corbin" Talks -- 1:15 p.m. & 2:15 p.m. at the Linden Terrace 

Come view "Tomb Effigy of Margaret Corbin" by artist Zaq Landsberg during the Commemoration of the Battle of Fort Washington event. Zaq is the 2020 recipient of the Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award, made possible with support from Janet and John Koehne, which provided $10,000 to this winning installation. Learn why Zaq was inspired to portray Revolutionary War heroine Margaret Corbin (1751–1800), his intent for the work, his methodology and more. 

 

About Tomb Effigy of Margaret Corbin, by Zaq Landsberg 

Landsberg's winning proposal pays tribute to Revolutionary War hero Margaret Corbin (1751–1800), considered the first woman to fight for America, and namesake of several Fort Tryon Park features. Corbin took control of her fallen husband's cannon and fought during the Battle of Fort Washington at this site in 1776. The artwork takes the form of the tomb effigies at The Met Cloisters, figuratively and aesthetically stitching together the Revolutionary War battlefield and the historical, relocated medieval French abbeys that comprise the Cloisters. In addition to paying homage to a lesser-known female historical figure, Landsberg's sculpture contributes to the contemporary conversation around representation in monuments and public commemoration.
