This year marks the 40th anniversary of NYC Parks' GreenThumb, which was established by the City in 1978 in response to the community gardening movement. Today, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country, with more than 550 community gardens across the city, totaling over 100 acres. GreenThumb provides materials, programming and technical support to these gardens, as well as monthly workshops. GreenThumb's 20,000 community gardeners produce more than 500,000 pounds of food each year.
