DISCOVERY DAY: EXPLORE UNOPENED SECTIONS OF FRESHKILLS PARK
Bike and hike 700 yet-to-be-opened acres of Freshkills Park on Staten Island
DATE: Sunday, June 3, 2018
TIME: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
LOCATION: Freshkills Park
350 Wild Avenue
Staten Island
DETAILS: Freshkills Park will host a free Discovery Day, opening more than 700 acres and eight miles of trails to the public for a day of bicycling, activities and tours. The free event offers New Yorkers a chance to explore the park before it opens and learn more about the landfill-to-park transformation project. The site is otherwise closed to the public.
Activities:
Bicycling - rent a bike for free or bring your own to explore miles of paved roadway, including a three-mile loop along meadows and wetlands.
Tours - NYC Audubon and NYC Sanitation will offer free guided walks. Self-guided hikes are also encouraged.
Kids – Fly kites at the top of the mound, make wind chimes with recycled materials, and create Sun-print art.
Entertainment – enjoy musical performances by the Staten Island Philharmonic and help paint a collaborative community mural on the bridge over Main Creek.
Transportation:
Shuttle buses will transport visitors to and from the St. George Ferry Terminal (Ramp E, Taxi Stand) into the park. Those arriving by bicycle can enter at the 350 Wild Ave. entrance. For cars, parking will be available just outside Freshkills Park in lots near 350 Wild Avenue. From there, visitors can take a shuttle bus or walk one mile to the main event area.
This event is presented by NYC Parks, NYC Department of Sanitation, and the Freshkills Park Alliance. Those interested can register at http://freshkillspark.org/programs/discovery-day-june-3.
