Brooklyn, NY: Roulette presents Berlin-based Italian sound artist and performer Alessandra Eramo. Eramo will present her intuitive, non-narrative musique concrète collage, to move beyond the sound into the more visceral layers of poetic expression. With distinctive vocalisations, lautpoesie eruptions and dynamic use of analogue electronics, she investigates sound and its relationship to real and imaginary territories, challenging concepts like "identity", "intimacy/fragility", "unexpected/unknown", therefore the concept of "noise".

"For Alessandra Eramo, music is not so much a universal language crossing borders of culture, tradition and education.  Rather, it represents the communication tool best suited to express universals – hidden truths, archetypes and, to put it in her own words, "archaic memories" shared through intuition, spirituality and the passing down of knowledge from one generation to the next (…)"

Alessandra Eramo (1982, Taranto, Italy) is a sound artist, performer and researcher based in Berlin, working in the area of extended vocal techniques, sound-and visual poetry. Her research is mainly focused upon the interferences between Sign and Voice: writing and sign in its multiple forms, and the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument.  Her works include text-sound compositions, participatory performances, videos, music for theatre and dance, installations that were exhibited and performed internationally, among others, at: International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale 2011 / Sonic Circuits Festival Washington DC / Lyd & Litterature Festival Aarhus / Festival Bandit' Mages Bourges / Harvestworks New York / Wizytujaca Gallery Warsaw / Italian Culture Institute Stuttgart / Galerie Haus am Lützowplatz Berlin. Since 2010 she's co-founder of the vinyl & sound art production Corvo Records in Berlin, where she has also co-released the LP 'Popewaffen' and her solo LP 'Come ho imparato a volare'. She has worked and performed among others, with Gino Robair, Marta Zapparoli, Seiji Morimoto, Fred Frith, Phillip Greenlief, David Fenech.  She has trained in classical singing and piano since an early age. She studied Visual Arts and Performance at the Academy of Fine Arts Brera in Milan (Italy) and in Stuttgart (Germany). In 2006 she holds the Master Degree at the Faculty of Philosophy and Science Theory of Ca' Foscari State University, Venice (Italy).

·         Session II classes run from Wednesday, July 25 to Thursday, August 9

Registration begins at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 16

 

·         Session III classes run from Monday, August 13 to Friday, August 24 Registration begins at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, August 6

DETAILS:                 Knowing how to swim this summer will keep you healthy and safe. Parks is offering free lessons more than 30 outdoor pools throughout the five boroughs. Classes are available for all ages, including: Toddlers (1½-5); Children (6-17); and Adult (18+).

 

Registration for the free swim classes is hosted online through the parks website. If you don’t have internet access, staff is available to assist in registering and you can also access the website using a computer at your local library. Be sure you/your child will be available for all classes before registering.

Brooklyn, NY: Irondale announces a special free performance of the Walter Thompson Orchestra (WTO) Percussion Ensemble, June 21, as part of Make Music New York's free day of music. The performance features four percussionists in an exciting, intense and ambitious Soundpainting event.  Soundpainting, created by Thompson, is a unique sign language developed around musical composition and can encompass live musicians, visual artists, dancers, actors to provide a visceral and inspiring audience experience that has seen Thompson collaborate with the legendary Anthony Braxton and perform to sold out houses worldwide.

 

For these performances, guest Soundpainter, Evan Mazunik, will lead the four-member WTO Percussion Ensemble - Eric John Eigner, Hollis Headrick, John O'Brien and Andrea Pryor, all of whom are fluent in the Soundpainting language.  The first performance begins at 6:30 on the corner of Fulton and South Oxford Streets, Fort Greene, with a march to the Irondale Center.  At 8:00 pm the performance features the premiere of "Kupala," for two drum sets and percussion. 

 

Soundpainting comprises more than 1200 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter to indicate the type of material desired of the performers. The creation of the composition is realized by the Soundpainter (the composer), through the parameters of the each set of signed hand and body gestures indicating specific and/or aleatoric material to be performed by an individual performer, a specific number of performers, or the entire group.  The Soundpainter develops the responses of the performers, molding and shaping them into the composition and then signs another series of gestures, a phrase. The Soundpainter, listening and looking at the responses of the players, decides the next direction of the piece, signs a phrase - to a performer or performers - and continues in this process of composing the piece in real time. The Soundpainter can include a musical score, a theater script, choreography and/or other elements depending on the nature of the performance.  Visit Soundpainting.com for more information.
