Looking for an occasional dog-walker

Hello!

I'm looking for a dog-walker in Ditmas Park/Midwood (near Foster & E. 18th Street) for a 40-lb, 1 year old, shepherd-dingo mix named "Charlie". She is very friendly, ridiculously cute, and walks well on a leash (but likes to sniff everything). If you are a runner, charlie is a great furry running buddy.

I'll need help every now and again on weekday afternoons (anytime between 11am - 4pm) or weekday evenings (anytime after 5pm, before 8pm). This would not be a very regular gig (maybe 5 or so walks a month?). I can pay up to $15 for a 30 minute walk, and $30 for an hour walk.

Media Literacy Comes to Brooklyn Public Library

LA Times journalist teaches free workshops on how, why news is made

BROOKLYN, NY: The LAMP (Learning About Multimedia Project) and the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) are holding a series of free media literacy workshops during the spring. Designed to build critical thinking and basic media production skills, the workshops will be available to youth, parents and families at branches throughout the borough.

"We are thrilled to be working with the BPL to bring our unique brand of media literacy to a wider audience," said D.C. Vito, Executive Director of The LAMP. "We think it's really important for families to work together in learning how media shape our lives. At the same time, we know this can be a real challenge for families and schools that are already stretched thin, and so we're grateful for the opportunity to offer workshops for free."

Workshops will cover a range of topics within digital and media literacy, such as how and why news stories are reported in different ways, and how messages in advertising, television and other media can affect the way people think. Other workshops will cover Healthy Digital Relationships, teaching young people how to interact with others online, maintain privacy, grow friendships and use the Internet to find a job, go to school or get involved in local community issues. In some workshops, hands-on activities will also lead participants to create their own media projects.

"It is so important for our patrons to learn how to think critically about media," said Judy Kamilhor, Coordinator of Digital Literacy Outreach at Brooklyn Public Library. "That means that they not only need to know what questions to ask about what they see and hear in ads, movies, TV shows, music and the Internet, but they also need to know how to use those media to create their own media for learning and personal expression."

Workshop facilitators are frequently veterans of the media industry, such as Paul Brownfield, who spent a decade writing for the Los Angeles Times. "I think media literacy has never been more important as a concept for everyone," said Brownfield. "Working with young people through the Brooklyn Public Library to think about the technology and news they consume and live with, and interact with it in a different way, as The LAMP would have them do, is a very valuable mission."

Is anybody looking for a large, long-haired, black and white tuxedo cat? All black with white nose and throat. He has been sighted around the neighborhood and seems skittish and scared of strangers, but I think he once belonged to somebody and is not a feral.

I saw him last night racing south through the intersection of Cortelyou Road and E. 16th St (fortunately unscathed - this time) and people have seem him in other locations. Given the wide range of his roaming, I don't think anybody has taken him in.

Hello! I am moving out of my 16'x11' bedroom on 2nd floor of 4BR / 2.5 bath limestone row house in Ditmas Park. I need someone to sublet for the remainder of my lease, which runs until April 1, but to be fair to the roommates who are still living there you must be willing to stay on past then as well. Which I am sure you will once you check the house out and meet the other roommates!

Your bedroom has a bay window with view of leafy backyard (which will be covered in ornamental cherry blossoms come May), a walk-in closet and smaller normal-sized closet. High ceilings and old-house details, hardwood floors. Washer and dryer in basement. First floor has foyer, kitchen, a huge living room with bay windows, and a dining room with sliding glass doors exiting into the backyard. The living room is furnished, but because of its size there's space for additional furniture if you want to bring yours.

Exclusive, fenced-in backyard for summer BBQs, gardening, etc.

The house is located on E23rd St. between Newkirk and Ditmas Aves., ~8 minute walk from Newkirk B/Q and 2/5 subways. Also right next to the B41, B48 and B8 bus routes.

Loc'n at edge of Caribbean neighborhood with excellent cheap eats. C-town grocery around the corner has great Asian sauces and Jamaican curry selection.

Three roommates, one guy and two ladies, late 20s to mid-30s in age. A painter and two poets.

Move in anytime, total rent = $600 / mo. until April 1 when my lease is up. You must be willing to sign a one year lease starting April 1. Rent at that point will be up to discussion with the remaining roommates, but likely in the $750 / mo range (total house rent is $2500, with two big bedrms and two little bedrms). Utils are split evenly between roommates and typically run about $100/mo each.

ON THE CANCELLATION OF WINTER JAM 2012

“We are disappointed to have to announce that due to the unusually warm weather, the Parks Department made the hard decision to cancel Winter Jam 2012, originally scheduled for Saturday, February 4^th in Prospect Park. It is simply too warm to make snow, and the long-range weather forecasts and current ground temperatures make it extremely unlikely that snow could be made.

Winter Jam has been an official NYC Parks tradition for the past ten years, and has afforded thousands of New Yorkers the opportunity to try out winter sports for free. We are grateful to our partners at the Olympic Regional Development Authority, Lake Placid, I Love NY, and other sponsors for their continued support of this one-of-a-kind event, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the outdoors this month by visiting one of the six skating rinks in City parks, or checking out a nature program offered by the Urban Park Rangers. "SAME RIVER" is a multi-media, interview-based, improvised production. As hydro-fracking is poised to affect NYC's water supply, "Same River" brings the upstate war over this controversial method of drilling downstream. Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble, whose production of "10 Brecht Poems" was heralded by the Village Voice as "poignant and appreciated," will premiere "SAME RIVER" starting February 23, 2012 and run until March 3, 2012 at the Irondale Center on 85 S. Oxford St. Brooklyn, NY 11217. Tickets $20-$40 ($15 tickets Wed/Thurs only). Including live music, modern dance, physical theater, and video, this improvised show will be different every night. Following each show, there will be a tightly facilitated "town hall" discussion on the issues the piece presents. Experts will be on hand to propel the conversation.

Audience members will experience a visual art installation upon entry to the theater. The artwork is the result of a seven-week residency at nearby Brooklyn High School for the Arts with the science, theater and technical theater classes. Art work will also be developed during a community art-making day for families on February 11 at 2:00 PM at Irondale Center (ages 6 and up).

Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble began to develop SAME RIVER in July 2010 as part of the North American Cultural Laboratory's (NACL) Catskill Festival of New Theater. During this 10-day residency, Strike Anywhere interviewed local residents about water and researched community water issues. Now, as the decision to lift the moratorium on fracking in New York creeps nearer, Strike Anywhere seeks to engage the Fort Greene neighborhood in this discussion. The ensemble will trace the path of Brooklyn's water supply and illuminate the struggles of communities upstate which are in the thick of the gas-leasing gold rush. Interviews with Brooklyn residents will examine their relationship to water, their knowledge of local water issues and their familiarity with fracking. The piece seeks to draw connections, to give voice to multiple viewpoints and to acknowledge that we are all downstream, that the earth's water supply is all the same river.

Established in 1997, STRIKE ANYWHERE is a permanent ensemble of world-class jazz musicians, modern dancers, and actors. Known for their use of SOUNDPAINTING, the live composing sign language, the ensemble creates art in the moment, allowing intuition, the sounds of the room and audience suggestion to shape what they play. SA performances always feature live music, physical theater and modern dance. The company applies structures and concepts from American jazz to their inter-disciplinary improvisations to create performances that are provocative and alive. Strike Anywhere has toured nationally and internationally. The company was in residence at The Zipper Factory and St. Clements developing new works. It has appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the American Airlines Theatre, The Irondale Center, P.S. 122, Theatre for the New City, and HERE Arts Center. Brooklyn, NY: Roulette presents award winning choreographer and director Stephanie Skura in her first major NYC appearance in almost 20 years with piece Two Huts with performances March 15, 16, 17 & 18, also, there will be an artists talkback on Tuesday, March 13 at 7pm. Hailed by Dance Ink as "a great American experimentalist" Skura has been creating and performing original works for over thirty years to international and national acclaim. Her stellar reputation for adventurous work precedes her while her unique skills and approach have seen her teach and train performance at some of the worlds most prestigious colleges and studios. Skura has been passionate about empowering and celebrating individual diversity and finding ways to do this through dance. Her rehearsal process involves unpeeling methods: revealing subconscious layers both strange and familiar. For decades, she has researched, practiced, and taught approaches to movement that allow dance to be a manifestation of the complexity of our consciousness. Two Huts extends Skura's 25 years' research in free-associative forms of movement into theater & text, revealing underlying realms startlingly familiar. Skura has been developing the work for the past two years in residencies at Juniata College, PA, and in Seattle with the support of 4Culture. Two Huts is the culmination of her research of the past decade into radical language, theater & voice, integrated with her lifelong experiments in movement & performance. This work has been selected as a sponsored USA Artist Project, & is partially supported by Seattle 4Culture, as well as by Roulette.

About Stephanie Skura
Stephanie Skura, has choreographed, directed, taught and performed for 30 years, in 13 countries and 30 states, investigating boundaries of dance, theater and performance. She directed a New York City-based touring company for 15 years, received an inaugural "Bessie" Award, and has been honored with seven Choreography Fellowships and five Dance company Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as grants and commissions from many corporations, foundations, government agencies and performing companies worldwide. Her work has toured at major festivals in Zurich, Vienna, Lisbon, Budapest, Italy & Vancouver, and at such US venues as the Walker Art Center In Minneapolis, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and in New York City at Dance Theater Workshop, the Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center, Central Park Summerstage, Danspace, and Performance Space 122. An innovative teacher & mentor, she was on graduate faculty at the University of Washington School of Drama for 5 years, on core faculty of the Seattle Skinner Releasing Institute and Teacher Certification Program for 14 years, and is creator and director of Open Source Forms Teacher Certification, with centers in Seattle and New Zealand. She holds a BFA & MFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. With a collaborative approach to performance-making, she has pioneered & refined methods for involving performers in discovery & development of material. She was an early researcher of movement-based interdisciplinary work, inspiring students & professionals worldwide. From 2004-2010, Skura was Associate Artistic Director of The Gravity Project, a movement theater company affiliated with Juniata College in PA.

Producing collaborator Debra Wanner is a founding member of Skura's NYC company and has been instrumental in fundraising becoming a co-sponsor through her own non-profit Interaction Arts.

Brooklyn, NY: Roulette presents DANCEroulette, a five night festival of performing artists working within movement, sound, spatial design, visual cacophony, choreography, improvisation, ephemeriality, and theatrical re-imagining. These 15 New York-based dance artists arrive at dance and performance through various points of view, and each evening will host three performances of diverse results. Roulette has presented dance since it's earliest days, and is happy to offer artists a larger space to present their work. On Monday, January 23, 2012, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, with Chief Conductor Jeffrey Tate, will perform a new multimedia concert of Olivier Messiaen's modern orchestral masterpiece Des canyons aux étoiles (From the Canyons to the Stars) at Roulette in downtown Brooklyn, one of New York's newest venues for adventurous contemporary music and new media performances.

Olivier Messiaen's 1974 Des canyons aux étoiles (From the Canyons to the Stars) was commissioned for Lincoln Center by Alice Tully to commemorate the American Bicentennial.

In 2010, the Hamburg Symphony presented the first concert with the modern video presentation created by acclaimed Israeli visual artist and composer Daniel Landau, who has taken Messiaen's spacious, picturesque tableaux of nature and the divine as starting points for a cautionary essay on humanity's looming destruction of our fragile world.

The Hamburger Abendblatt said it had "the emotional intensity, visual power and bewildering complexity of a true myth."

Chief Conductor Jeffrey Tate says, "The production is a total event. Particularly in the context of a work that was actually commissioned for America, it seems wonderful to be able to bring this work back to America enriched, we hope, with this extraordinary visual element as well." The conductor describes the evening as "a mix of a walk through a modern art exhibition and a concert."

Three screens suspended above the orchestra display Landau's haunting visions of creatures venturing from primeval landscape into dystopian vistas. The filmed elements — which have shades of directors David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi) and music videos — are controlled by Landau during the performance. He also created modern depictions of the Catholic images and ideas that permeate Messiaen's work.

The work is scored for a small but diverse orchestra of 44 musicians with a formidable percussion section that includes a wind machine and a geophone (Messiaen's own invention), a metal drum with swirling pellets inside. The ensemble presents unique logistical and acoustical challenges, yet will fit Roulette's flexible space well.

The piano soloist in this concert is Francesco Tristano, an artist who is no stranger to unusual repertoire and alternative venues. This young pianist and composer has appeared at Le Poisson Rouge with pianist Bruce Brubaker and collaborated with Detroit techno legend Carl Craig.

What if you could LIVE as that protagonist instead of just reading about someone else's journey? What if life was one big live-action Choose-Your Own-Adventure? Led by the interactive performance ensemble Playing with Reality, this workshop begins with several exercises that create a safe, nonjudgmental space and teach the fundamentals of interactive improvisation. Workshop participants will then step into the role of the protagonist of personalized, improvised stories that they get to co-create on the spot. By remembering how we played make believe as kids, we can learn valuable, real-life lessons about the choices we make, the connections we nurture (or neglect), and the challenges we can ultimately overcome.
