Poseidon's Parade

Family-Friendly Art Parade Coming to the Brand New Rockaway Boardwalk

DATE:                        Saturday, September 19, 2015

TIMES:                       11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

LOCATION:               Parade kicks off at Beach 106th Street, and will travel down the boardwalk to Beach 95th Street

REGISTRATION

INFO:                          Online registration is encouraged, and costs $5 for individual marchers, and $10 per float.

                                    http://poseidonsparade.brownpapertickets.com/

DETAILS:                   The Poseidon's Parade is a family-friendly art parade that encourages creativity and artistic expression. It is the work of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, the locally-run float that has represented the peninsula at the annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. After winning best motorized float two years in a row – and having a blast for many, many other years – they decided, with support from Community Board 14 and the Parks Department, to bring a parade across the bay.

Participants can march solo, with a group, on a float or on a bike. Prizes will be awarded in different categories highlighting the most creative, seaside and ocean themed costumes.

After the parade, kids and families can celebrate in the "Under the Sea Lounge" with a DJ, face painting, hula hooping, the Parks Department mobile playground, crafts and other activities.

Michael Clyde Johnson's Parklet for Ennis Playground adds artful seating to park

DATE:                        August 31, 2015 – August 30, 2016

LOCATION:               Ennis Playground

                                    11th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues

Brooklyn

DETAILS:                   As a parklet within a park, Michael Clyde Johnson's Untitled Benches, Patios, Planters in Arrangement (Parklet for Ennis Playground) provides additional public amenities to Ennis Playground, and by extension to the wider Gowanus neighborhood. This multi-faceted project includes three modular components (patios, benches, and planters), which create additional distinct lounge and play areas within the park. By extending the idea of a parklet – generally conceived as an extension of sidewalk space into the street to provide additional seating and green space – to encompass these same functions within an existing public space, Parklet for Ennis Playground creatively augments the existing park infrastructure and enhances the community's experience of their local park.

Michael Clyde Johnson is a sculptor working in Hudson, NY. He holds an M.F.A. from Hunter College, and studied at Harvard GSD and the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, ME. His work has been exhibited in a number of NYC parks, among other venues. Awards include grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Public Art Fund.

This project was made possible with funding from Councilmember Brad Lander, in partnership with Arts Gowanus and the Old Stone House & Washington Park.

The 10-week training program begins soon in each of the five boroughs.  For a low cost, participants learn topics like basic anatomy, exercise physiology, injury prevention, music, cueing and body toning with light weights through ten 2.5 hour classroom and gym sessions.

After participants finish the training portion of the program, they get practical experience by leading a one-hour Shape Up NYC class per week as part of a six month internship.  The internships take place at a variety of sites across the five boroughs, including schools, hospitals, community centers, NYCHA facilities, and senior centers.  When they finish the program, participants receive a certificate of completion, and the classroom training and practical skills to spread the benefits of fitness and healthy living.

NYC Parks’ Shape Up NYC program is a fitness initiative bringing free, instructor-led exercise classes to locations across New York City.  The classes are open to all New Yorkers with no pre-registration.  The program recently expanded to over 300 free fitness classes per week in more than 150 locations in all five boroughs, thanks to sponsors Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and NYC Service.
